How to Layer Necklaces

Necklaces are one of our favorite go-to accessories around here. Of course, we have a special place in our heart for all accessories, but there is something about necklaces that can truly transform an entire outfit. Chances are you’ve already mastered the art of pairing your favorite necklace with different outfit combinations, but this season it’s all about layering to create a unique accessory look. Layering necklaces are similar to layering clothes-understanding a few key tips will allow you to master the art in no time. To help you master these tips, we’re sharing our favorite tips on how to layer necklaces.

Choose different lengths

The first tip to understand when it comes to layering necklaces is to choose necklaces that are different lengths. Those varying lengths of necklaces are what truly help create that layering effect when they’re paired together. This isn’t to say that they all have to be very different lengths, just as long as they’re not all the same exact length. In other words, you can layer a short necklace with a necklace that’s rather long, or opt for all longer/shorter options. It’s really up to you! In addition to the varying lengths creating the layering look, it also allows each necklace to be displayed. When every necklace is the same length, it’s much more difficult to see each piece for their individual beauty. The combination of these necklaces is an example of varying lengths:

Create a monochromatic theme

When layering necklaces, a great way to create a cohesive style is by choosing pieces that are all in the same color scheme. For example, if you have a grouping of gold necklaces in varying lengths, pairing them together will create a monochromatic look. This is a great way to get in the habit of layering necklaces and since the colors are already the same, you don’t need to worry about “matching.” When layering necklaces in a monochromatic style, it’s common for the layered look to appear as one larger layered piece. This necklace combination is an example of a monochromatic theme:

Mix different scales

One of the “don’ts” associated with layering necklaces is to combine two statement necklaces together (think major statement necklaces, like a bib style). Doing so can be too much for your look, and can really overwhelm you. Instead, combine necklaces that are composed of different scales (or sizes). For example, if you have a statement, bib style necklace that you want to layer, pair that with a delicate necklace. The difference in scale creates a really unique look, and also allows each necklace to stand on its own (similar to what we mentioned about the lengths). To give you some inspiration, this combination is an example of necklaces in different scales:

Mastering the art of layering necklaces takes practice, but once you get into the habit of just trying to pair different necklaces together to create a layered look you’ll soon become an expert. We’re willing to bet it will quickly become a go-to style look for you, too!
