Columbus Day ~ A Reason to CELEBRATE

Columbus Day ~ A Reason to CELEBRATE

Columbus Day is a U.S. holiday that commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the Americas in 1492.  For many, the holiday is a way of both honoring Columbus’ achievements and celebrating the Italian-American heritage. But throughout its history, Columbus Day and the man who inspired it have generated great controversy and many have proposed alternative celebrations.  This year, Columbus Day is recognized on Monday, October 8, 2018.

So Why Does Columbus Have His Own Holiday?

Columbus Day was informally celebrated by various Italian- and Catholic-American communities as far back as the late 1700s. Anti-Catholic and anti-Italian sentiments were common in the US at the time, and Columbus served as an uplifting symbol for these communities.

How is Columbus Day Celebrated?

While most Americans just take Columbus Day as a day off work, some cities do host parades to celebrate the holiday.  Both New York and Boston have huge Columbus Day parades.  San Francisco has one too but has re-named theirs the Italian Heritage Parade.
